The MTV Video Music Awards 2012 offered few surprises

Did Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appear together?

This year's MTV Video Music Awards is a wrap. The show, quite honestly, offered few surprises. And no, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart did not appear together. Stewart is in Toronto, at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she's busy promoting her new movie On the Road. Pattinson was at the VMAs, appearing alongside his Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 cast mates to tease a new clip from the film.

Overall, the show was just so-so. Yes, I caught a few highlights that I really enjoyed, but I'm starting to find these kinds of shows repetitive and boring. One thing I definitely enjoyed about the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards: performances by Green Day and Taylor Swift. Green Day was in classic form, with front man Billie Joe Armstrong belting out a fantastic live version of the band's new song, "Let Yourself Go." I can't tell you how excited I am about the new Green Day album (out later this month), ¡Uno!  Green Day always gives inspired performances on the VMAs and this year was no exception.

Now, for Taylor Swift's MTV VMAs performance: It was good. Not great, but good enough. Swift's newest single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," is yet another angst-ridden, blistering indictment of an ex-boyfriend (I think it's Jake Gyllenhaal, but hey that's just me). She always has fun on stage and she's a great performer.

As for the rest of the show? I wasn't overly impressed. Even the 90-second Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 clip seemed a bit lame to me (sorry, Twihards). Robert Pattinson looked great, as he always does. I'm glad Kristen Stewart wasn't there -- this is about the movie, not the former hot couple's drama.

Did anyone else watch the MTV VMAs? If so, what was your favorite part?
