Kim raised the funds on the trading floor of the Cantor Fitzgerald offices in New York City last September. The firm held the fundraiser with the help of celebrities on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, when they lost more than 600 employees in the aftermath.
It's a nice gesture from the 1%, but you have to wonder how much more good could be done if Kim had donated any fraction of her own money to the cause she selected. Let's say she shaved off a little of the expense from her wedding and funneled it towards making the world a better place. She could probably do even better than the $50,000 she made by trading in September.
But I guess we shouldn't complain, even if Kim is just trying to enhance her image as an LGBTQ ally. At least the funds will go towards training people to respond to queer youths in crisis. With the recent waves of bullying-related suicides, The Trevor Project needs all the help it can get with helping gay teens feel safe in their own skin. Doesn't much matter where the money is coming from as long as it's coming.
