Jef Holm and Emily Maynard really are over

'The Bachelorette' couple call it quits.

Well, it seems The Bachelorette couples really are cursed, because now there's yet another breakup, and it's a big one: After getting engaged during this past season's Bachelorette finale, Emily Maynard and Jef Holm have decided to split.

Is anyone shocked by this? Rumors of cheating and strife have followed this new (and now, ex) couple for months now. Honestly this whole thing is getting ridiculous. Quit calling it The Bachelorette, ABC. How about a new name: The Show Where a Gorgeous Woman Finds a Guy to Date for a While! Well OK, that's too long, but you get the idea. The pressure has to be tremendous on these Bachelor and Bachelorette couples. Everyone wants to know their every move now, and when you're just starting out, that probably puts a strain on even the best matches. Emily Maynard and Jef Holm were no exception, and now they join the list of failed Bachelor/Bachelorette couples as a result. According to Emily, she and Jef did experience true love, but it just didn't work out. She says it was a "very difficult and heartbreaking decision." Breakups are always tough, but public ones like this have to be a nightmare.

What about Emily's young daughter, Ricki? That's the part that irks me. No doubt this child bonded quickly with the charming Jef, and now she's once again left grieving as yet another of her mother's boyfriends hits the road. It's disturbing. Emily, hun, I think it's time to date for a while and keep things low profile. If not for your sake, do it for your daughter's sake.

Former 'Guiding Light' actress Maureen Garrett sheds light on her personal life

Garrett's exclusive interview on coming out, Holly Norris and Costa Rica projects

Veteran Guiding Light actress Maureen Garrett recently revealed her 20-year relationship with her partner, Janet Morgan. We have the exclusive Q&A with Garrett from the OUT Magazine interview. Read on for more of Maureen Garrett, from her favorite storylines to her current projects in Costa Rica.

 Q. What was it like to say goodbye to Guiding Light and Holly for the last time? Were you satisfied with the way Holly's story ended?

MG: On the one hand, it was tough to say goodbye because I felt Holly had a lot more to say and do. We all felt that way, even though we knew the end was coming for a long time.  On the other side, I was over it. It had been a long run, far longer than I ever expected and I was ready to do other things with my life. Holly went off to travel the world with Ed and that felt right, she had always loved Ed and it was a healthy, grown-up relationship.

Q. Was there any one storyline that you particularly enjoyed?

MG: I loved the Roger and Holly story, as sick as it was, I adored the complexities of the story and working with Michael Zaslow was a joy.  He was tough, but exciting to work with and we had a genuine chemistry on and off screen.

Q. Were there any storylines that you disliked playing?

MG: Kidnapping all the children in the “Nursery Rhyme Stalker” story was not my finest moment.  The final story line when Holly was kidnapped by Sebastian and I had to play the Stockholm syndrome angle was particularly hard to take.  It was around this time I started thinking it was really time to move on.

Q. Is there anything you'd consider to be high and low points in your GL career?

MG: High point when I was on location shooting in Santa Domingo, in the actual jungle when Roger stole me away, and the low point, after golden years, when I was kidnapped into the “jungle” in the 44th Street studio by Roger’s son Sebastian.

Q. One question that fans keep coming back to is, what are you doing now? Are you still acting?

MG: After GL, I took off from New York.  I no longer felt any desire to pursue acting, that muse had flown, but I hauled huge pieces of wood up to Massachusetts that I had been sculpting.  I wrestled with writing a novel/screenplay/play.  I traveled back and forth to Costa Rica and with my family have been developing a food forest there.  Gardening has always been a love of mine and my partner's, Jan Morgan and our son Paul is involved in the agroforestry movement there.

I wanted to spend more time with my mother and the last year of her life when we brought her to live in our house on this lake in MA is one of the most beautiful and cherished memories.  In the spring of 2012, after she passed, Charles Towers, artistic director of the Merrimack Rep in Lowell, MA , dangled a juicy role in a new play “Ghost-Writer.”   He offered, I bit.  I played a character who ages from her 40s to 50s , then 60.  I was engaged and electrified by the experience.  Funny how things come around again.  I am on the look-out for my next project.

Maureen and partner Janet Morgan (second from left)

Q. Do you read the blogs about Guiding Light? Have you seen your Guiding Light clips on YouTube?

MG: I think it’s great that people still are interested.  I have only seen it when my niece Jessie or Mimi Torchin, once editor of Soap Opera Digest, or someone else sends me a clip.  But no, I don’t follow the blogs or message boards.  Stroking the publicity end of the business was never my interest.  I do realize there are still fans out there when I am recognized in the line at the post office or bank tellers recognize my voice.  I am flattered that people remember.

Q. Do you have a web presence?

MG: There is one in the works for the projects we are managing in Costa Rica. Look for Sequent Management Group in the fall.

Q. Your fans consistently refer to Holly as "complex" and "multifaceted" and your performances as "dignified," "discreet" and "captivating." How were you able to make your performances so convincing?

MG: I put a lot of effort into portraying that character.  My approach was kind of like a painter.  First the broad strokes to understand the action in the scene, then adding layers of her history, with the scene partner and with other relationships. Understanding where her humor might lie, when she is not telling the truth, when she is fudging, hedging, seducing, covering… her struggles, frustrations, tenacity. When she wanted to give up or then fight on with everything she had.  To me, it was mostly endlessly fascinating and I loved that job for years.

Q. Did you have anything in common with Holly?

MG: Not always her clothing choices, and certainly not her footwear.  And she wore far too much makeup.  It was endlessly entertaining for my family and friends to see me show up in jeans and boots, straight from my cabin in Montauk, and undergo the transformation. Holly and I both, however, loved the “chase” and various forms of escape.  At the end of the day, I almost always washed off the makeup and with it, Holly’s brand of crazy.  Maybe people were drawn to her because I didn’t let it all hang out, they could project their pain and struggles onto her.  The fan letters seemed to reflect that.

Q. Are there any causes or social issues that are of particular interest or importance to you?

MG: Pesticide use, saving the oceans, clean water, healthy food, access to education and VOTING.  As I mentioned before with my interest in agroforestry: there is a lack of affordable fresh foods in so many neighborhoods.  The average middle class family can’t afford to keep their family healthy.  I follow politics closely and support people like Elizabeth Warren and marvel at the depth of Obama’s presidency. The problems he is attempting to solve have been coming to a head for 30 years.  He can’t be expected to do it all at once and needs our support to be given another term.

Q. Is there anything else that you would want people to know about you?

MG: Physical training is another passion.  As I get older, I realize how important weight training is.  I work with a trainer and am stronger than I have ever been in my life. It’s great for strength, stamina, and let’s face it, for looking and feeling good.  I also swim, row and hike daily (have I mentioned my other love – Romeo, the dog?)

I am very happy and fulfilled.  I have a relationship of more than 20 years with my best friend and partner, Janet Morgan.  We have raised three boys, now young men who are gifts to this world.  Lucky are their future partners (grandchildren anytime, guys). They are all environmentally conscious, healthy, funny and loving.

Our oldest son lives in Stockholm and works on environmental issues [and our second son] lives in Costa Rica, working in agroforestry, with a particular interest in breadfruit for poverty alleviation.  Our youngest recently graduated college and could be making a career out of his summer job of leading wilderness treks in the U.S. and Canada. I am very close to one of my nieces, an artist who came to live with us for years.  She has given me the opportunity to help raise a fine young woman. She lives in Portland, Oregon and is part of the food movement there.

Holly -- the character who read Browning, referenced Kierkegaard and had torrid love affairs -- was unquestionably cool. So is the woman who played her. Nice work, Maureen!

Lindsay Lohan has a wicked fight with mom Dina Lohan

Audio captures some seriously ugly moments.

So much for Lindsay Lohan heading to New York City and staying out of the tabloids! A new audiotape has surfaced that captures Lindsay and her mom, Dina Lohan, in a major fight. The mother and daughter can be heard squabbling about money, and at one point, Lindsay even claims that Dina is under the influence of cocaine.

Yikes! Lindsay and Dina Lohan are no strangers to bad press, but this definitely ranks way up there as far as scandals go for both of them. Things start out bad and go downhill from there.According to reports, the recorded fight between Lindsay and Dina Lohan happened as the two left a New York City nightclub together. They'd both been partying (shocking!) and were heading to Dina's house in Long Island around 4 a.m.. when they started arguing.

On the tape, posted by TMZ, Lindsay Lohan can be heard screaming at her mother and then calling her dad, Michael Lohan, for help, claiming that Dina was "saying disgusting things" to her and that she was "dead to her now." Lindsay tells her father that the two are fighting over a $40 thousand loan she gave to Dina to "save her home from foreclosure." In short, daughter wanted mom to give the money back!

It gets worse: Lindsay can also clearly be heard telling Michael Lohan that Dina was "on cocaine" and that she has a "gash" on her leg from the fight. Additional reports suggest that when the limo carrying the Crazy Lohan Women did finally arrive at Dina's house, police were already there waiting. No charges were filed.

Lindsay Lohan's entire family is completely nuts. If I had any doubts before, I definitely don't now. No wonder Lindsay's such a train wreck: Listening to the fight with her mom, it's clear that Dina Lohan is a hot mess as well. And don't even get me started on Michael Lohan -- he's as much of a problem as his ex-wife. It seems like Lindsay Lohan really does need to get as far away from her screwed up family as possible, if she ever wants to lead a normal life!

Seth MacFarlane is hosting the Oscars!

Excellent choice by the Academy.

Hey Seth MacFarlane fans, it's time to rejoice! Our hero is going to host the 85th Annual Academy Awards ceremony next year! Seriously could I add any more exclamation points to this post? I'm excited. It's allowed.

I have to say, I always find the Oscars to be seriously boring. I tuned in the year that Anne Hathaway and James Franco hosted, with hopes that maybe, just maybe, they'd be funny. Instead I got a total disaster. Call me crazy, but I don't think that will be the case with Seth MacFarlane hosting.I actually thought Seth MacFarlane was hilarious during his recent hosting job on Saturday Night Live. I also caught his presentation during the 2012 Emmy Awards last week, and he managed to make a technical screw-up extremely funny (when it doubt, always pull out the Family Guy Stewie voice). I was shocked to hear that Seth was picked as the next Oscars host, but pleasantly shocked.

Does this mean he'll co-host segments of the Academy Awards with Ted? With Stewie? With Mila Kunis?! Yes, please, to all of the above. I absolutely think MacFarlane can and will deliver big as an Oscars host. No, he's never starred in movies, but he did direct what might wind up being the biggest comedy movie of 2012 (the hilarious Ted). The man knows pop culture, and if the Academy wants to draw a younger demographic to the show, this is exactly how to do it. And he's also a really decent singer, so I expect some solid musical numbers!

OK fans, what say you? Is Seth MacFarlane a great choice to host the 2013 Oscars? If not, who would you prefer?

Who is the new 'Bachelor?' ABC makes the official announcement.

He's a familiar face to fans!

After weeks of speculation, we now know who will be the next star of ABC's The Bachelor, and he's a name that should be really familiar to those of us who follow The Bachelorette. It's Sean Lowe! Wait, who? Oh come on, you remember sweet Sean, the adorable, soft-spoken Texan that Emily Maynard kicked to the curb during the most recent Bachelorette season, right? The blonde with the gorgeous chest?

That's right: Sean Lowe the Hottie is next up to become the center of attention as the country's most eligible man!I really liked Sean Lowe when he was on The Bachelorette, even though I knew Emily wouldn't pick him. Quite frankly, he was just too nice. Emily was obviously head over heels for Jef Holm and Arie Luyendyk, locking lips with both as frequently as possible. Still, I rooted for good ol' sweet Sean for weeks.

When Emily finally told Sean goodbye, the thought crossed my mind that he'd be an excellent choice for The Bachelor. I didn't have the same reaction when Ari got the boot during The Bachelorette finale. Arie seemed too cocky.

The thing about The Bachelor (for me) is this: No matter how awesome the guy seems at first, I wind up hating him as the season progresses. And, since I already had some reservations about cocky Arie, I knew it would only get worse if he got picked. With Sean, there's a fighting chance I might not hate him for half of the season.

See the logic here? Fans of these shows probably understand exactly what I mean. Non-fans, well, you think I'm writing gibberish. Just know that in this Bachelor fan's opinion, Sean Lowe is a great choice! He's down to earth and he deserves to find a special someone after the heartbreak he went through on The Bachelorette.

'American Idol' has the judges in place

Who got the other two spots?

Oh American Idol, I'm trying so hard to still like you, but it's becoming more and more difficult. After months of speculation and wild theories, we now know that Idol will have four judges this year, and only one of them is a veteran. Who got the other spots?

We already knew that Mariah Carey was on board as a new American Idol judge this year, and we recently found out that Randy Jackson was also staying (there was some talk he might move to a mentor spot). Now, AI has chosen two additional judges, and I'm sitting here wondering if this little experiment is going to work.Without any further adieu, the new American Idol judges are: Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. So, what do you think? Are you overwhelmed with joy, or totally under whelmed by the decision? I'd have to say I'm in the latter category at the moment.

I was totally on board with bringing Mariah Carey in as an Idol judge. She's an industry veteran and heck, half of the AI contestants pick her songs to sing during auditions anyway. Who better to judge their performance? I'm also really glad that Randy Jackson is returning. I miss Simon Cowell terribly, but Randy offered some great critiques last season.

Now, let's discuss the two newest judges, shall we? I like Keith Urban, and I think that American Idol needed a country music-oriented judge. It's quite obvious that country is an extremely popular genre on Idol, so he'll certainly be able to add a different perspective with his critiques. But Nicki Minaj?! Really?! Sure, her music is fun and popular, but will Nicki really be able to bring something of value to the table? The other three judges have proven their talents for years -- Nicki has always struck me as a flash in the pan.

I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't think this is going to work out very well for American Idol. Disagree? Let's hear it in the comments!

Is a Kardashian interview more important than a 9/11 moment of silence?

NBC thought so.

NBC is under heavy fire after opting to air a Today show interview with Kris Jenner, the matriarch of the Kardashian family. Why? Because it happened on Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Instead of observing a moment of silence to mark the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center, NBC opted instead to launch right into a Today show segment with Kris Kardashian about her hit TV reality show. I was watching, and I couldn't believe it.Since when are the Kardashians more important than remembering 9/11? NBC: Fail. The network's competitors all cut away from their regular programming and went silent at the appropriate time. This is a sad commentary about the state of our society. Sure, the Kardashians are fun and silly and all that good gossipy stuff. But it's hard to ignore the screw up here. CNN, CBS, ABC's Good Morning America and FOX News all observed the solemn moment. NBC interviewed Kris Jenner, and my head nearly exploded.

Kris yapped on and on about how busy things were with finishing up the seventh season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. They discussed Kris' plastic surgery re-do. In other words, they discussed things that were typical Kardashian: breast implants.

Nothing against the Kardashians. Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian are certainly mainstream stars that get lots of TV face time in interviews. But NBC's decision to air Kris Jenner's interview instead of stopping down to respectfully mark the moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center is simply inexcusable. Shame on NBC!

Did Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively get married?

Rumor has it the two have tied the knot.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have been dating for about a year. In that time, they've been virtually inseparable, even purchasing property together in upstate New York. Rumors that these two were planning to marry have swirled for months and now, it seems, they've actually done it!

Ryan and Blake got married over the weekend, in a ceremony held in South Carolina. How plans for the big day got past the press I'll never know, but everyone's on it now!
Little is known about the wedding, except that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds married at the posh Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. That area is simply stunning, and Boone Hall is a historic locale. It's a short drive from Charleston, so if you're in the area, it's worth checking out.

Back to the celebrities: Blake and Ryan apparently wed in a ceremony held on Sunday evening, with a reception held right after the vows were spoken. People Magazine quotes an anonymous source as saying that some of the reception music was provided by none other than Florence Welch, lead singer of Florence and the Machine. Take that, boring wedding string quartet!

Ryan Reynolds is a catch. Blake Lively is one of the most gorgeous women working in television and movies today. Together? They're blindingly beautiful. At this moment, no photos from the wedding are available, but I for one cannot wait to see them. Blake has such a great sense of style, and I'm certain that whatever wedding dress she chose looked amazing.

I honestly wasn't sure whether Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively would stay together. Obviously the odds are heavily against most Hollywood couples, but in this case, it's apparently working really well. Hopefully they'll find time for a great honeymoon. Blake is busy filming the last season of Gossip Girl and Ryan always has movies lined up.

Congratulations to the happy couple! Now, let's see some wedding photos!

The MTV Video Music Awards 2012 offered few surprises

Did Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appear together?

This year's MTV Video Music Awards is a wrap. The show, quite honestly, offered few surprises. And no, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart did not appear together. Stewart is in Toronto, at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she's busy promoting her new movie On the Road. Pattinson was at the VMAs, appearing alongside his Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 cast mates to tease a new clip from the film.

Overall, the show was just so-so. Yes, I caught a few highlights that I really enjoyed, but I'm starting to find these kinds of shows repetitive and boring. One thing I definitely enjoyed about the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards: performances by Green Day and Taylor Swift. Green Day was in classic form, with front man Billie Joe Armstrong belting out a fantastic live version of the band's new song, "Let Yourself Go." I can't tell you how excited I am about the new Green Day album (out later this month), ¡Uno!  Green Day always gives inspired performances on the VMAs and this year was no exception.

Now, for Taylor Swift's MTV VMAs performance: It was good. Not great, but good enough. Swift's newest single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," is yet another angst-ridden, blistering indictment of an ex-boyfriend (I think it's Jake Gyllenhaal, but hey that's just me). She always has fun on stage and she's a great performer.

As for the rest of the show? I wasn't overly impressed. Even the 90-second Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 clip seemed a bit lame to me (sorry, Twihards). Robert Pattinson looked great, as he always does. I'm glad Kristen Stewart wasn't there -- this is about the movie, not the former hot couple's drama.

Did anyone else watch the MTV VMAs? If so, what was your favorite part?

LeAnn Rimes enters treatment and files a lawsuit

Singer claims she was cyber-bullied.

It's been a busy week for LeAnn Rimes. The singer, who just turned 30 earlier this month, entered treatment for what's described as "anxiety and stress." It's great that she's getting help, but what brought this on? What could possibly be so stress-inducing that it prompted Rimes to seek help from professionals?

The answer, it seems, is cyber bullying, sort of. Rimes is suing two women that she claims taped her private phone call and then put the entire conversation on Twitter, for the world to see. Wait, what?!LeAnn Rimes seems like the type of celebrity who doesn't mind constantly being in the limelight. She probably has lots of friends, but just as many enemies. And Rimes claims that two of those enemies are Kimberly and Lexi Smiley. The two women went off on LeAnn, trashing her for her affair with Eddie Cibrian. Of course, LeAnn and Cibrian are now married, but at the time they got involved, Eddie was still married to Brandi Glanville. It was a rocky road, to be sure.

Here's the gist of what's going on with this lawsuit: LeAnn Rimes claims that California mom of four, Kimberly Smiley and her 19-year-old daughter, Lexi, secretly recorded a part of a phone call to them. LeAnn apparently took it upon herself to call Kimberly and try to smooth things over, after Kimberly bashed her on Twitter.

Wow. Seriously. Wow. A major celebrity is SO concerned about what's being said about her on Twitter than she calls a California high school teacher to try and get her to LIKE her?! Then, when the teacher (allegedly) tapes the convo and puts it on Twitter, the celebrity files an invasion of privacy lawsuit?!

LeAnn Rimes' attorney potentially has a case with the whole phone call taping bit. You can't do that without consent from both parties under state law. So there's that. But this is the part that irks me: Rimes wants to be "compensated for the harm that she has endured as a result of the defendants' malicious actions." Oh, come on! Surely LeAnn isn't so fragile that she can't take a little heat, right? This is not a typical "cyber-bullying" case at all. This is flat-out cat fighting.

LeAnn Rimes really should just lay low and try to avoid the publicity as much as she can. The Eddie Cibrian drama had already died down, for the most part -- and now, because of this phone call she made and now the lawsuit, it's back in the headlines. Rimes is becoming her own worst enemy at this point. Hopefully, with treatment for her "anxiety and stress," she'll learn some healthier coping mechanisms.
